E5 Bakehouse refurb complete

The newly refurbished E5 Bakehouse reopened this past weekend. The café and coffee roastery is the cornerstone of Poplar Union, a multidisciplinary communal, social and creative centre supporting the local Tower Hamlets community.

The cafe, formerly known as E5 Roasthouse, first opened in September 2017 and aimed to provide employment for refugee women through their ‘Just Bread’ training course. They now offer a variety of training courses (Covid restrictions permitting) alongside their traditional artisan breads, coffee roastery and organic grocery provisions. Throughout lockdown they will carry on providing a takeaway service.

The café’s renovation is the first phase of a larger refurbishment, with the second phase due to commence next year. This phase will see the reconfiguration of the centre’s amenity spaces to provide more community meeting rooms. Ashfold have been appointed to oversee the construction tender and contract administration of both phases, already scoped under the supervision of the client.
